What actually changes when the guests are adults

Four specification lines separate adult-rated modules from children's units:

  • Per-person and per-module load. Adult modules are typically rated around 100–120 kg per user, with a stated simultaneous-user count per module. That second number is the one operators forget. A platform rated for six adults is not rated for a queue of ten waiting their turn.
  • Drop-stitch panel thickness and working pressure. Adult decks and walkways use thicker drop-stitch construction held at higher working pressure so the surface stays rigid underfoot. A soft deck under 100 kg is both slower and more dangerous than a firm one — ankles roll on surfaces that deflect.
  • Fall height and landing geometry. Adult jump platforms sit higher, which changes required water depth below and clearance to the next module. Adult reach also means handrails and grab lines need to be positioned for a taller user, not simply the same fitting mounted higher.
  • Connector and D-ring specification. Adult loads travel through the joins. Heavier webbing, larger D-rings and shorter connector spans keep modules from separating under a group surge.

Ask any supplier for these four figures in writing per module. If a quotation lists only dimensions and colour, it is not an adult specification.

Module types and how well they suit adults

Not every module in a catalogue works for an adult audience:

  • Jump platforms and blob/launch modules — the highest-demand adult attraction, and the most demanding on depth and supervision. Require the deepest water and the strictest one-user-at-a-time discipline.
  • Climbing walls and pyramids — strong adult appeal, high throughput. Watch handhold spacing: children's spacing is uncomfortable for adult reach.
  • Balance beams, logs and monkey bars — the core of the adult obstacle experience. Low depth requirement, high queue turnover, minimal supervision load.

Water depth, seabed and anchoring

Site assessment comes before module selection, not after. Four checks:

Effective depth under every fall zone. Depth requirements are set per module by fall height, and they are measured at low water, not at average water. On tidal or reservoir sites, calculate at the lowest level the site reaches during the operating season. Traverse modules need the least; high jump platforms need the most.

Bed type and obstructions. Sand and soft silt are straightforward. Rock shelves, submerged stumps and shifting gravel are not — they dictate anchor type and sometimes rule out a jump zone entirely. Survey the footprint, don't assume it.

Current, wave height and wind exposure. Sheltered bays, lakes and hotel lagoons suit floating parks. Open coastline with running swell does not, whatever the brochure photograph shows. Set an operating limit for wave height and wind, and a defined close-down procedure.

Anchor loading. A floating park is a large sail. Anchor weight and holding capacity are calculated from park area, exposure and bed type, with a safety factor, then distributed across multiple anchor points so no single failure releases the park. Capacity, lifeguard ratios and throughput

Total capacity is the sum of your per-module simultaneous-user limits, not the number of people the park can physically hold. Adults occupy modules longer than children, so a park sized purely by area will feel full at 60% of its theoretical count.

Build the operating model around sessions: a fixed session length of 45 to 60 minutes, a full changeover, and a briefing before entry. Sessions give you predictable throughput, a natural point to check wristbands and buoyancy aids, and a rest window for staff.

Divide the park into supervision zones with clear sightlines, and staff each zone rather than the park as a whole. Jump features need dedicated eyes. Confirm the required lifeguard ratio and qualification with your local authority or insurer before you finalise the layout — requirements differ by country and by whether the water is a pool, a lake or open sea, and your insurer's figure may be stricter than the legal minimum. Materials, service life and winter storage

Adult parks live or die on material specification. Commercial floating parks use heavy-gauge reinforced PVC for the outer skin, with drop-stitch panels where rigidity is needed and reinforcement patches at every connector and high-traffic edge. Specific points to confirm:

  • UV stability. Continuous summer exposure is the primary ageing factor. Ask what UV treatment the coating carries and how the supplier warrants colour and strength retention.
  • Salt water. Sea and brackish sites need a freshwater rinse routine and stainless or suitably treated hardware. Salt attacks fittings long before it attacks fabric.
  • Repairability. Field repair matters more than brochure durability. Order a repair kit with matching material, and check that panels are individually replaceable rather than bonded into a single assembly.
  • Winter storage. Modules must be fully dry before folding or you will open a mould problem in spring. Budget a covered, ventilated space and dry-down time at end of season — this is the step most first-year operators underestimate.

Procurement, packing and lead time

Floating parks ship as modules, and packed volume is the cost driver. A modest adult park consolidates into a 40 ft HQ container; larger installations run to multiple containers, in which case ask the factory to split shipment so you can commission the core layout while the balance is in transit.

Practical procurement notes:

  • Order anchors, connectors, blowers or pumps, buoyancy aids and repair kits as itemised lines — accessory gaps are the most common commissioning delay.
